Excuses: How to break the grip of the #1 thing holding you back

Excuses. We all use them. I am willing to believe however, that more times than not the excuses we give are not justifiable.

When was the last time you used an excuse? What was it for? Was your excuse genuinely legitimate or not? Let's be honest with ourselves.

Most of us could probably say that there is more that we could do, in some of the situations in which we give excuses.

For example:

Were you really too sick to go to work/school/church, etc.?

Did you really have to cancel that appointment?

And here is likely the biggest culprit of all...

What was the real reason you were so late and unable to show up on time?

Ouch! I know, I'm sorry, that one probably stung a little.

The fact of the matter is however, that most of us could likely give a little more effort and push through a great majority of the situations in which we give and use excuses.

Let's switch gears just a hair. Think about your life and ask yourself the following question. What's the real reason that you didn't (fill in the blank)?

There are probably hundreds of answers we could give to fill in the blank and sadly, hundreds more excuses to follow them.

I'd like to take just a brief moment and share a quote with you that I strongly believe, can help change the way we respond to different scenarios in our lives and begin to break the grip of the #1 thing that is holding us back...our excuses!

"If you can't take a huge step to begin with, take as big a step as you can, but take it now. That's the key, take it now!"

This a famous quote by the late Zig Ziglar - author, salesman and motivational speaker. When I think about this quote and then think about the excuses that many of us use in our lives in different situations, I have to wonder...are we able to take a huge step, even in the midst of whatever it is we are facing and if not, are we trying to take as big a step as we can?

If we are not, then what's our excuse? (Pun intended)

I believe that there is more to you than you may give yourself credit for!

The Bible says in Ephesians 2:10, "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life." - Berean Study Bible

We are created by God, to do good works and I believe there is often more that we are able to give than we actually do.

I fully understand that there are legitimate scenarios in which we have justifiable excuses. Those are not the situations that I am speaking about.

I am however, speaking about how often we give up, give in or throw in the towel, when there is so much more that we are able to give and reap a greater reward from in the long run.

Back to thinking about your life. Do you know where you are going and how it is that you plan to get to that destination? Or, do you just take life as it comes and let life "happen" to you instead of making and creating the life that God has empowered you to create!

Maybe you do not feel that you are able to take a HUGE step right now, as Zig Ziglar was quoted saying and that's ok! The question remains though, are you able and trying to take as big a step as you can?

I want to encourage you, take the biggest steps that you are capable of taking! Stop using excuses and refuse to give in to self-limiting beliefs.

What can you do today, even better yet, what can you do right now, that with just a little effort can bring about a result that produces something beneficial to you or others?
